Copper Roof Shingles MONJI

Lateral roofs made of sheet copper are used often in teahouses, temples, and shrines.
The elegance of the horizontal line and gentle appearance carved by history create the exterior beauty that is essential to traditional Japanese architecture. MONJI is a reliable Japanese roofing material that has both traditional beauty and excellent workability. It is available in many variations, including sheet copper, colored sheet steel, and colored stainless steel.

MONJI Features

Excellent workability

This product can be joined with one touch just by inserting the standing seam and pulling. It is scratch resistant and much easier to work with.

No warping

The product features expansion joints, which prevent warping from contraction and elongation due to heat expansion.

Crack resistant R-seam

The seams on old, sheet copper lateral roofs sometimes crack. These cracks are thought to have formed in areas of work-hardening from strong pressure put on the inside when bending the ends with a sharp blade. In order to prevent this, our MONJI are designed so that all seams are R-processed to make them resistant to work-hardening.

Standard length of 51 1/8" (effective length 48 1/4")

Both corner ridge and curved valley are special parts that are made of copper.
All models have the following six types of panels. Please check the intended use before choosing.

Field Panel/Right

Use when roofing from left to right facing the roof surface.

Field Panel/Left

Use when roofing from right to left facing the roof surface.

Field Panel/Center

Use for the center when roofing the left and right separately.

Alternate Starter Panel/Right

Use when roofing from left to right for the first row when using an L-Bent eave flashing.
The end is more rigid, which improves wind resistance. Drains well and makes a beautiful finish.
Use Field Panel Right from the second row.

Alternate Starter Panel/Left

Use when roofing from right to left for the first row when using an L-Bent eave flashing.
Use Field Panel Left from the second row.

Alternate Starter Panel/Center

Use for the center of the first row when roofing the left and right separately and using an L-Bent eave flashing. Use Field Panel Center from the second row.

Design and Installation Precautions

  • The elution of copper plates, may affect carp in ponds. Do not allow rainwater from the roof to lead directly into ponds.

  • When installing a “koshibuki” or framed roofing with copper plate, the roof tiles may accelerate corrosion of copper plates. It is recommended to perform two-layer roofing of parts connecting roof tiles.
